Good morning, Leopards, <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
What a great first day! Other than a record high of 107°, we had a perfect first day. There is no way to share just how exciting it is to see our children back in their classrooms after a long break. I’ve never been able to understand why children seem to grow several inches taller during the summer months! It was exciting to see you all! Welcome back!
Student Handbook (hardcopy in Thursday Folder)
Please be sure you’ve taken a moment to read over, along with your child, the Student Handbook on the Lovejoy ISD website – parent resources. Also, we’ll need you to verify that you and your child are familiar with the contents. There are attachments to guide you through the process along with other required updates.
Parent Portal (hardcopy in Thursday Folder)
Lovejoy ISD Parent Portal gives parents and students access to real-time information including attendance, grades, and detailed assignment descriptions. PowerSchool now provides single sign-on access to the Lovejoy Parent Portal. With single sign-on access parents/guardians can now have their own individual parent/guardian account, including user name and password.
Please note the individual student account login information that you have used in the past will no longer work to login to the Parent Portal.
In order to login to the Parent Portal, you must follow these steps:
1. Open your Web browser to http://powerschool.lovejoyisd.net/. The Log In page appears.
2. Click Create Account. The Create Parent/Guardian Account page appears.
3. Enter the required information in the Create Parent/Guardian Account section.
In order to create an account, you must have the Access ID (firstname_lastname) and Password (first initial of the first name and first initial of the last name followed by the last four (4) digits of the student’s social security number) for at least one student enrolled in school. When creating the account, you will need the Access ID and password for each student you want to associate to your parent/guardian account. For example:
Student: John Doe
Social Security Number: XXX-XX-1234
Access ID = john_doe
Password = jd1234
4. Use the student’s Access ID and Password in the Link Students to Account section.
If you need additional help, please refer to the Parent Portal User Guide: http://www.lovejoyisd.net/Uploads/34/misc/f191946.pdf
Once your account is created, you can manage your account information, link any and all students to your account (for whom you have parental and legal rights to), and set email and notifications preferences for each student linked to your account. If you've forgotten your account login information, you can retrieve them by using auto-recovery.

KidzScience Club
We will have the KidszScience Club again this year but haven’t quite nailed down all the details. Hopefully by Thursday, you’ll have a flyer in your child’s folder.
Social Skills
Our social skills for Monday the 30th to the 13th is “Greeting Others.”
When Greeting Others, you:
1. Look at the person
2. Use a pleasant voice
3. Say “Hi” or “Hello”
We will be practicing this for the next two weeks and hope you’ll take a moment to review with your children.
PTA Membership
Those of you choosing to join the PTA for the 2010 – 2011 school year will want to check the Thursday Folder for the yellow registration form. This wasn’t included in the summer mail out so be sure to thumb through the stack of papers for the form.
Kohl’s $500,000 Contest
Kohl’s has provided us with an easy way to earn money for our school. They are having a contest to commemorate their 10th anniversary and are donating $500,000 to 20 schools who will receive the most votes through Facebook. If you are interested, follow this link: http://apps.facebook.com/KohlsCares/search to the Kohl’s contest page. You then have to log into your Facebook account and you are given 20 votes of which 5 can be given to an individual school. There are only two weeks left in the contest. You could vote for 4 different schools (5 votes each). I hope you’ll support the Lovejoy Schools by taking a moment to cast votes within the next week and a half.
Upcoming Holiday and Early Release
Mark your calendars as we do have an upcoming 4 day work week. Both students and staff have a holiday on Monday, September 6th. Friday the 17th is an early release day with students leaving at 12:00.
Microsoft 2007 installed on all computers at Lovejoy Elementary
A change for both our staff and students will be the transitioning into Microsoft Office 2007.
We would like to provide you with a tool that will help with this transition. Below is a link to a Free Compatibility Pack update offered from Microsoft. This compatibility pack will allow you to view files that were created in Microsoft Office 2007 on a system that may be running a previous version. For example, if you have Microsoft 2003 on your home computer, this compatibility pack will all your son or daughter to access files at school in Microsoft 2007 and at home in Microsoft 2003. We encourage you to take the time to install this free update to help alleviate any problems that may arise between systems (school and home) running separate versions of Microsoft Office.
To install the update, follow the link below. Read the simple directions provided from Microsoft and click on the Download button. When the pop up appears, select “Run."
