Memorial Day Edition

May 28, 2010

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Dear Lovejoy Community:

Monday is Memorial Day and all LISD offices will be closed. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 31 in 2010). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I.

“I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did”. -- Benjamin Harrison

Making a Difference

Last night I attended the Track Banquet. As I have mentioned, I enjoy these banquets as the kids celebrate their accomplishments from the year. This has been a banner year for both Cross Country and Track. We have been talking about the Lone Star Cup which the U.I.L. gives to the top high school with the most success in all sports. As you know, LovejoyHigh School currently leads this competition with 89 unofficial points and our Cross Country and Track programs contributed 21 of those 89 points. With that said, the most memorable moment of the banquet was when 4 year track letterman, Connor Day, got up to thank  Coach Christensen for what he had done to make him a better runner and most importantly, the lessons he has learned from him for life. For those of us who have chosen education as a career, there is nothing more rewarding than to know that you have made a connection with a student that has made a difference.

Foundation for Lovejoy Schools—Denim and Diamonds Event

We would like to offer our sincere appreciation for the success of this year’s D&D gala. Because of your generosity, this year’s event earned slightly more than $170,000. Our teacher committees have been working on the list of things we need for our classrooms and the Foundation will choose items off of that list for our schools. This community does an excellent job of supporting our schools.
