June 4, 2010
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Dear Lovejoy Community:
Once again we appreciate all that you do as parents and taxpayers to support the work that we do with your sons and daughters during the school year. While many of us may be ready for this year to come to a close, we will definitely be ready for your children to return to our classrooms this August. The summer will certainly fly by and the 2010-11 school year will be ready to kick off in grand style. Enjoy your summer and appreciate the work we have accomplished this year. I generally ask you to send me your suggestions for improvement when I send out this last day of school email, but this year I will be putting out a survey in the next couple of weeks to get more detailed information.
Graduation—Class of 2010
Tomorrow is a historic day for Lovejoy ISD as the Founding Senior Class will walk the stage as the first graduates ever of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />LovejoyHigh School. You are all cordially invited to attend the Graduation Ceremony at the AllenEventCenter beginning at 10:00 am. If you would like to watch the event on the web or have out of town family, our graduation is scheduled to be web cast by the AllenEventCenter. Please go to http://www.ustream.tv/channel/allen-event-center to view the ceremony.
LHS Journalism
I have not had talked with you about the success of our journalism students and wanted to take the opportunity to do so today:
Ratings. Student publications are judged by the University Interscholastic League Press Conference and assigned ratings by publications specialists. The judges are master teachers who have advised award-winning publications and who know the nuances of student publications.
Award of Distinguished Merit - The association's highest rating was earned by both the Lovejoy Yearbook and the Lovejoy Newspaper.
Top publications The top publications are also entered into competition for ILPC's prestigious Gold, Silver and Bronze Star awards. Recipients of the Star Awards represent the top 10 percent of student newspapers and yearbooks in Texas. The Lovejoy 2009 Yearbook earned the Silver Star Award.
Individual Achievement Awards Students may submit entries ranging from news writing to sports photography to yearbook theme development. The competition is keen, and the champions represent the nation's finest scholastic journalism. The Lovejoy Newspaper staff took home several awards in the statewide 3A competition as follows:
Personal Opinion Column - First Place - Helen Hansen
Double-Truck Design - Third Place - Libby Wise & Kyle Karnuta
Sports Action Photography - Third Place - Stephen Docherty
Page One Design - Third Place - Helen Hansen
News Writing - Honorable Mention - Danielle Corley
Sports Action - Honorable Mention - Josh Jacobs
Sports Feature Story - Honorable Mention - Michael Pham
Sports Feature Photography - Honorable Mention - Stephen Docherty
Students who win first place in their category are then placed in a competition with all First Place winners from all sizes of schools in Texas. One is chosen as the "Tops in Texas" for each category. Helen Hansen was chosen as the Tops in Texas for her Personal Opinion Column.
Thanking a Teacher
If your son or daughter has had a great experience with one of his or her teachers this year, please remember that www.lovejoylove.org has the section called The Wall. You can post your thanks on The Wall and the teacher will receive an email to go take a look.
Thank you so much for everything you do to support the Lovejoy system and most importantly for allowing us to spend so much time with your sons and daughters each year.
With Respect,
Ted Moore
Superintendent
