Back to School Edition
August 20, 2010
Dear Lovejoy Community:
I had a new experience last weekend. I went to watch my 2 ½ year old grandson, Beckett, do Soccer Tots. There were about 10 2-year olds in the class. The “coach” did a great job, but I have to admit that it made “herding cats” look easy. It was fun though and Beckett definitely thought he won.
Monday begins the start of the 2010-2011 school year and marks my 34th “first day of school” as an educator. I must admit that I still find the start of the school year to be an exciting event as we consider the possibilities of providing each child the best school experience that they have ever had. Our staff has worked hard over the summer to be prepared for the start and we will expect you to let us know about those things that we need to smooth out to make the experience positive for everyone. I will remind you that lots of folks will drive their kids to school for the first few days which will create traffic lines both in the morning and the afternoon. It will settle down as we all get into our routines and more of you opt to utilize bus service. I recommend leaving a little early next week and bring a little extra patience with you.
TEA Ratings—Exemplary
The official district and campus ratings were released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in late July. As I had mentioned in early June, all campuses in LISD were rated as Exemplary and the district as a whole was also rated Exemplary. We are particularly proud of the number of Lovejoy ISD students who earned a score at the commended level on all tests taken. I will share some specific info on these numbers in a later communication. You may have noticed that the Dallas Morning News ran a story on average SAT scores in the metroplex, but that Lovejoy ISD was not included. This is because the manner in which the College Board releases summary data is one year behind the current year. The data in the newspaper was for 2009 graduates and Lovejoy did not yet have a graduating Senior class.
Kohl’s $500,000 Contest
Do you Facebook? If so, Kohl’s is running a contest to commemorate their 10th anniversary by giving $500,000 to 20 schools who will receive the most votes through Facebook. If you are interested, follow this link: http://apps.facebook.com/KohlsCares/search to the Kohl’s contest page. You then have to log into your Facebook account and you are given 20 votes of which 5 can be given to an individual school. There are only two weeks left in the contest. You could vote for 4 different schools (5 votes each). In addition to any of the Lovejoy ISD campuses, I noticed that Lucas Christian Academy is currently in the Top 10 in this contest. They evidently have been working their network to be in the running for this half million dollar prize. I did some checking and learned that they have made a concentrated effort at this award in order to pay off the debt on their land. Today when I logged in, I chipped in 5 of my votes for Lucas Christian since they have had such a strong showing with only two weeks left in the contest. As a public school guy, it is surprising to me that Kohl’s started this contest when school was not in session.
If you have any last minute questions before Monday, please contact the campus or our central administration building. The main number for the school district is 469-742-8000 and the direct line to my office is 469-742-8011. In the event that you have a burning question that needs to be answered before Monday morning, you are welcome to call me on my cell number, 972-415-8129.
With Respect,
Ted Moore
Superintendent
