Summer Edition
June 17, 2010
Dear Lovejoy Community:
I am often asked what we do in the summer since school is out. Most school administrators will tell you that the summer is incredibly busy, but the intensity is different. While I enjoy planning and preparing for the next school year, I must admit that it is kind of boring around our campuses without your kids. Please enjoy them this summer because we will be more than ready for them to return in August.
News from our Majestics Dance Team
Two of our recent LHS graduates have been selected to join the Tyler Junior College Apache Belles. The selection process to make this squad is highly competitive and we send our congratulations to both Emilie Smith and Justine Bain on this accomplishment. Hard work does indeed pay off.
State Funding for Public Schools
We are moving into another legislative year in the State of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Texas which will mean that we will need to follow the legislature closely as they again make decisions on school funding. Our funding levels from the state have been effectively frozen for 4 years now and most schools have used up the available capacity in the existing funding mechanism. We find ourselves at this point at the same time that the State of Texas is projecting a $15-$18 Billion shortfall. While we are certainly due some relief in funding, we may well have to focus on protecting our current state revenue stream. Some in the state are starting to float the idea of requiring school districts to draw down from their local fund balance to make up the short fall in state aid. This would penalize districts like Lovejoy that have been good stewards of our funds and built a fund balance that is sufficient to carry us through the first four months of the school year until tax collections become significant. We will continue to update you as move into the legislature session in January 2011.
LHS Student Photo Makes Prom Finalist
An amateur photo of two our LHS students, Kelsi Matthews and Drew Carson, has been chosen as one of the ten finalists for best prom couple. The ten finalists are posted on the web and the winner will be chosen by folks like us who go to the website and vote. You can vote for Kelsi and Drew (Kelsi has the purple dress) by going to http://bit.ly/95DTI4. The deadline to vote is June 30 and you may vote once a day from now until June 30.
Lone Star Cup
As you know, the U.I.L. awards the Lone Star Cup in each conference to the school with the most overall success in all sport and academic contests. LovejoyHigh school is leading and has led all year. Final results should be posted to the UIL website on Friday, June 18. Those results become final on July 1. I expect us to win unless my math is incorrect.
