Dear Lovejoy Community:
I know for most you there are still a few weeks of summer left. For those of us who have returned to work since our two week vacation, we are now in the 2010-2011 school year. Speaking of vacation, I had two great weeks at the beach with my family and especially the grandkids. We were on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />South Padre Island when Hurricane Alex arrived and we decided to ride it out instead of leaving. The eye of the hurricane was about 80 miles south of the island so it was really a one day storm and then it was over. As it turned out, we were glad we did not leave.

Preparation for College Entrance Exam—the SAT
As our kids move into their Junior and Senior years, many of you will begin to look for options to help your sons and daughters do their best on the college entrance exam and specifically the SAT. While many preparation programs are available, we have contracted with one that we have reviewed and believe that it has value and is reasonably priced. The program that will be available this Fall at LHS is delivered by Revolution Prep. They run a six week program that meets on Monday nights and on Saturdays. The six week program includes:
- Personalized homework and feedback on essays
- 5 full length practice exams (Saturdays)
- Engaging and knowledgeable instruction.
Revolution will be holding on campus prep courses leading up to the October 9 SAT, November 6 SAT, and the December 4 SAT. Jeannie Walls, our Director of College and Career Readiness, attended the program along with 12 LHS students last Spring. These students had previously taken the SAT and after the course, saw an average gain on the next SAT of 187 points. 12 students is a small sample size, but the results are certainly worth investigating. I believe the cost of the program is $450 per student. For details, please contact Jeannie Walls at

Lovejoy Kids Continue to Excel in Summer Activities
· Indoor Rock Climbing—Danielle Rogan has earned a spot on the Team USA for the World Championships held in Scotland in September. Danielle earned her spot from her success in the USA Climbing SCS Youth National Championships held in Atlanta this month. In her age group, Danielle placed 18th in the nation in Sport climbing and 4th in the nation in Speed Climbing. Congratulations to Danielle and good luck in her next competition.
· Beach Volleyball—Ashley Prince has been selected by the USA Beach Volleyball Association to participate in the U.S.-Russian Bilateral Presidential Commission’s Youth Beach Volleyball Exchange supported by the U.S. State Department. The group will travel to Russia in August. Ashley will be a great ambassador to build relationships with the Russian athletes.
Please enjoy what remains of your summer activities, but know that we will be glad when it is time for your sons and daughters to return to our classrooms. As an old guy, I have had lots of “first day of school” experiences, but I still look forward to them with excitement and optimism that the best year yet is on the horizon.
With Respect,
Ted Moore
