Dear Lovejoy Community:
National Merit Scholars Distinction—6 Juniors Advance Program
As you know, over 1.5 million Juniors across this country take the PSAT in the fall of the Junior year. The College Board selects the top 50,000 scoring students and enters them into the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. Ultimately, less than 20% of these students will earn the distinction of National Merit Finalist and slightly more than 8,000 students will receive a National Merit Scholarship. The Class of 2011 has posted some impressive academic marks to date and the following students have been entered into the National Merit Competition. They are:
- Chase Anderson
- Zachary Bogucki
- Scott Gallaway
- Helen Hansen
- Brandon Sayeed
- Anjali Sethi
Please congratulate these students as this distinction is quite noteworthy.
Class of 2010—Senior Project Excellence
I am proud of many of the things that your sons and daughters accomplish within the classrooms of Lovejoy ISD. However, I must tell you that I experienced one of my proudest moments last Thursday evening when I went to LHS and watched three students present their Senior project to a 4-member juried panel. The LHS Senior project is a year long endeavor where students study an area of interest for them. The project is comprised of two distinct phases: written research paper and the activity of completing the project that they have selected. Students also have a mentor who has expertise in the area they are studying. I watched three high school seniors present in a professional manner with poise and depth and then answer questions from the panel. All Seniors offered that the project had been fun and important for them. The three kids I saw all stated that the project had significant impact on what they planned to pursue after high school. I am already excited to see what the Class of 2011 will do for their Senior Project experience. This community has also been an excellent partner to volunteer as mentors and judges.
Dr. Mike Goddard—Leaving a Legacy
The LHS Pop Show last night was incredible and with its Legacy theme also served as the perfect backdrop to honor Mike Goddard and his work in Lovejoy. I have known Mike since he was 16 and his departure is bittersweet for me. I shared with the audience last night that I feel like the parent of a Senior in high school who is preparing for their kid to go off to college. I have watched Mike navigate high school as a student with much success and then I have seen him do excellent work for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I watched him transition from FCA and become a high school teacher, then a high school assistant principal. He came with me in 2005 and began the mission to create a wonderful high school experience for each and every child in LISD. On a personal note, I watched him complete his doctorate, meet his future wife and become a devoted husband and father. He has a great career opportunity and he is doing the right thing to accept the assistant superintendent position. I am grateful that he chose to come and serve this community with us as we made the transition into a full K-12 school. He has given his heart to this work and made a difference for us all.
I also wanted you to know:
- Baseball team advances another round in the playoffs and our softball team ended a stellar season with a loss to the #1 ranked team in the state
- Another great theatre production at SCMS tonight at 7:00 pm. They are offering Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”.
- When I shared state tennis results last week, I failed to properly credit Kenny Sweeney and Colby Seamster as the 3rd place boys’ doubles team in Class 3A
- LHS Graduation for the Class of 2010 is Saturday, June 5 at 10:00 am. Graduation exercise will be held at the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />AllenEventCenter.
Thanks for the opportunity to serve this community as your superintendent
With Respect,
Ted Moore
