Dear Parents and Guardians,

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = XXML /><?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

Thanks for a great second week, we enjoyed seeing everyone at Open House on Monday and Tuesday night.  As we begin our third week of school, this is traditionally a time when the workload of middle school students begins to increase.   After school commitments through extracurricular activities begin to pick up, as well as academic responsibilities in the classroom.  During the third and fourth weeks of school, students will begin to have their first quizzes, tests, and projects of the year.  We always encourage students and parents to visit the CAT Website on a weekly basis to align their academic responsibilities with their extracurricular commitments.  Enjoy the long weekend with your friends and family, have a safe and happy Labor Day.

SCMS CAT Website

Beginning this week, teachers will be loading their weekly lesson plans on the SCMS CAT Website.  The lessons of the upcoming week will become live every Sunday morning at 12:00 am.  This is an excellent resource for students and parents to plan their schedules for the upcoming week.  The lessons will provide information about activities that were done in class and/or assigned for homework.  They will also include information about  quizzes, tests, and/or projects that will be each week.

You can access the CAT website by going to http://scms.lovejoyisd.net .   Click on “Parent Resources” at the top of the page, scroll down to “Academic Lesson Plans by Grade.”  Each grade level has a link to all of our core teacher lesson plans.  An additional link for elective teacher lesson plans is also provided.

Science Enterprise

Go where no scientist has gone before.  This year, SCMS is offering a new extracurricular opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students that are enthusiastic about science and engineering.  This unique program will provide a venue for students to extend their intellectual experience and fuel their curiosity to challenge the world around them.  Science Enterprise aims to answer the unanswered questions through science competitions and contests.

Eighth grade science teacher and marine biologist Scott Johnson will be the sponsor of this program.  Scott brings a wealth of experience, including research in underwater caves.

Science Enterprise will have its inaugural meeting next Wednesday, September 8 in room C500 from 4-5 pm (and will meet weekly for the rest of the year).    Come join “Captain” Johnson as he embarks on a new frontier in science.

Upcoming Holiday and Early Release

Mark your calendars for the upcoming 4 day work week.  Both students and staff have a holiday next Monday, September 6th.   Friday the 24th is an early release day with students being dismissed at 12:45.

Friday September 24th is also Leopard Friday.  Leopard Friday is a community event held at the LHS courtyard prior to the varsity football game against Abilene Wylie.  The event is filled with fun and festivities for all ages.

DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Tuesdays

Continuing with our districts’ goal of making lifetime learners and readers, SCMS will have a 15 minute school wide reading period EVERY Tuesday at the beginning  of 4th period (for 7th/8th graders and right after lunch for 6th graders). This will begin on Tuesday, September 14th.  Students may use this time to read a book, magazine or newspaper of their choice. Please help your student to get in the habit of always carrying something of interest to read with him/her, especially on Tuesdays!

Textbooks

This week, we began passing out textbooks to all of our students.  Each student at SCMS will be issued a set of textbooks for use at home.  By early next week, all student textbooks will be issued.  Please keep an eye out for these textbooks, as they will remain at home for the entire school year.  Each classroom at SCMS also has a class set of textbooks, so it is not required for your student to bring his/her textbooks to and from school.

Parent Sign In at SCMS

Sloan Creek Middle School has updated our visitor sign-in system. The updated system is called Positive Proof Intercept. Positive Proof is the same system we have used in the past to track visitors, students, volunteers, and staff but now the system requires the use of a state-issued ID.  Positive Proof Intercept enhances school security by reading visitor drivers’ licenses, comparing information to a sex offender database, alerting campus administrators if a match is found, then (assuming no match was made) printing a visitor badge that includes a photo. The system was piloted at Lovejoy High School this past school year and over the summer all campuses have been updated. The overall goal of this system is to increase the safety of our schools.

About This Site

So much can be said in a name. In our case, our name says it all. First and foremost, this web site is a labor of love by a group of parents to celebrate the school district that is the heart of our community.

Lovejoy is a community of students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents and residents of all ages. This is a web site by and for our community. There are so many good things happening in this community on a daily basis that we had to dedicate a whole web site to showcase them.

We hope this web site will be a source of inspiration, and we invite all of you to share the love that is Lovejoy!
