Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope everyone enjoyed a beautiful Labor Day weekend and stayed afloat with all of the rain this week. We had another great week at SCMS, our students and teachers are working hard both in and out of the classroom, it is great to see their commitment and dedication in all that they do. Next Friday, September 17, we will host our first 6th grade social activity of the year. The 6th Grade Game Night and Social will be from 6:00—8:00 PM at SCMS. For more information about this and other upcoming events, please see below for details. Have a great weekend. Go Leopards!

Progress Reports

Keep an eye out for your student’s bright yellow progress report that will be passed out during their 4th period class on Tuesday, September 14. The purpose of the progress report is to communicate to the parents where your student stands halfway through the six week grading period. If you would like more information about your student’s grade(s), please contact their teacher, counselor, assistant principal, or myself; we will be happy to assist you with any questions or concerns.

Parents are always encouraged to view their student’s grades through the Parent Portal in PowerSchool. To do this, please visit the SCMS website (http://scms.lovejoyisd.net) for directions to assist you in creating a log-in account. Parent Portal directions can be found on our website under “Parent Resources.” Through your power school account, you will have access to all of your student’s grades, assignments, and attendance 24/7. This live and unlimited access to your student’s academic information will assist us in moving toward a “greener” campus.

6th Grade Game Night & Social

Next Friday, September 17, is the Fall, 6th Grade Game Night & Social. All SCMS 6th grade students are invited to attend. Students will have the opportunity to hang out with their friends and/or participate in a variety of games. There will be board games, indoor soccer, 3 on 3 basketball, and/or volleyball. Wii or Xbox games will also be available for students to play. All electronic games will be appropriate for middle school age students.

The 6th Grade Game Night & Social will be at SCMS from 6:00—8:00. We look forward to seeing our 6th graders at this event.

Report Cards

In the past, all SCMS students have received a hard copy of their grade report for each six weeks. We have also mailed home a hard copy once grades were finalized. In an effort to “go green,” we will not be mailing home report cards for this school year. Your student(s) will still receive a hard copy of their report card each six weeks through their 4th period class. The student copy of the report card will be printed on yellow paper for students to take home.

If you would prefer to have a hard copy of your student’s grade report to be mailed home each six weeks, please contact Carol Vik at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Picture Day

A reminder that fall pictures will be taken during Math class on Tuesday, September 14. A picture order form was sent home Tuesday. Please complete and return this form by Tuesday the 14th.

Early Release Reminder

Friday the 24th is an early release day with students being dismissed at 12:45.

DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Tuesdays

Continuing with our districts’ goal of making lifetime learners and readers, SCMS will have a 15 minute school wide reading period EVERY Tuesday at the beginning of 4th period (for 7th/8th graders and right after lunch for 6th graders). This will begin on next Tuesday, September 14th. Students may use this time to read a book, magazine or newspaper of their choice. Please help your student to get in the habit of always carrying something of interest to read with him/her, especially on Tuesdays!

Textbooks

Each student at SCMS has been issued a set of textbooks for use at home. Please keep an eye out for these textbooks, as they will remain at home for the entire school year. Each classroom at SCMS also has a class set of textbooks, so it is not required for your student to bring his/her textbooks to and from school.

SCMS CAT Website

Beginning this week, teachers will be loading their weekly lesson plans on the SCMS CAT Website. The lessons of the upcoming week will become live every Sunday morning at 12:00 am. This is an excellent resource for students and parents to plan their schedules for the upcoming week. The lessons will provide information about activities that were worked on in class and/or assigned for homework. The site will also include information about quizzes, tests, and/or projects that will be due each week.

You can access the CAT website by going to http://scms.lovejoyisd.net . Click on “Parent Resources” at the top of the page, then, scroll down to “Academic Lesson Plans by Grade.” Each grade level has a link to the core teacher lesson plans. An additional link for elective teacher lesson plans is also provided.

Science Enterprise

Go where no scientist has gone before. This year, SCMS is offering a new extracurricular opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students that are enthusiastic about science and engineering. This unique program will provide a venue for students to extend their intellectual experience and fuel their curiosity to challenge the world around them. Science Enterprise aims to answer the unanswered questions through science competitions and contests.

Eighth grade science teacher and marine biologist Scott Johnson will be the sponsor of this program. Scott brings a wealth of experience, including research in underwater caves.

Science Enterprise will meet every Wednesday in C500 from 4-5 pm for the rest of the year. Come join “Captain” Johnson as he embarks on a new frontier in science.

Geographer's Club

All Sloan Creek students are invited to become members of the SCMS Geographer’s Club lead by Mr. Preheim. Meetings will be held every Thursday from September 16 – December 16 in Room C100. The goals of the club are to learn about the Earth’s geography while preparing for the National Geography Bee, all in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Club permission forms may be picked up at the front office.

BIRTHDAY PATROL

Let the Majestics surprise someone you know on their birthday by putting signs in their front yard! For more info, go to our website www.majesticsdance.org and click on the birthday cake.

Lost and Found

With just three weeks into the school year, we’ve already started quite a collection of “Lost and Found” items. If your student is missing an important item, please have them swing by the Lost and Found table located just outside the cafeteria. All electronic items found will be held in a secured location in the main office until claimed.

Parent Sign In at SCMS

Sloan Creek Middle School has updated our visitor sign-in system. The updated system is called Positive Proof Intercept. Positive Proof is the same system we have used in the past to track visitors, students, volunteers, and staff but now the system requires the use of a state-issued ID.  Positive Proof Intercept enhances school security by reading visitor drivers’ licenses, comparing information to a sex offender database, alerting campus administrators if a match is found, then (assuming no match was made) printing a visitor badge that includes a photo. The system was piloted at Lovejoy High School this past school year and over the summer all campuses have been updated. The overall goal of this system is to increase the safety of our schools.

Get Organized

Saturday, October 16. “Get Organized” workshop will focus on helping 6th grade students develop their own organization plan for managing homework and extra-curricular activities. Students will develop their weekly plan, set goals, and learn strategies for academic success and balance in their schedule. Please visit http://scms.lovejoyisd.net/Announcements.cfm#0 for more information.

TED Talks

(Technology, Entertainment, and Design) Friday, October 15 at SMU from 12:30 -5:00 pm. Do you have a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader who would be interested in a Ted experience designed just for them? About This Site

So much can be said in a name. In our case, our name says it all. First and foremost, this web site is a labor of love by a group of parents to celebrate the school district that is the heart of our community.

Lovejoy is a community of students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents and residents of all ages. This is a web site by and for our community. There are so many good things happening in this community on a daily basis that we had to dedicate a whole web site to showcase them.

We hope this web site will be a source of inspiration, and we invite all of you to share the love that is Lovejoy!
