Our students in fourth grade are having a great time creating a "mini me." Using a string cut to their height, students half their measurements to draw themselves. With this assignment, students learn measurement and ratios. Once completed, the students will have a gallery of all the mini me's and have an insightful discussion of proportion and making connections with measurement. First grade students at Hart recently discovered that there are indeed baby chicks inside their eggs. Beth Jacobsen visited the first grade classrooms to show us how to “candle” the eggs. This involved having a special light that was held up to the eggs so that students could see inside. The eggs were then sorted into three categories. “Winners” were the eggs where an embryo could be seen. “Quitters” and “Yolkers” were the other possibilities. We obviously were excited when we saw lots of “Winners”! We are soon to be the proud caretakers of lots of baby chicks! Written by Brittany Bright Hart 1st Grade Teacher |

The kindergarten students at Hart Elementary recently hosted a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on May 26th to help buy books for needy schoolchildren in Jamaica. Each grade level at Hart Elementary picked a Capstone project that would serve as a learning tool across all curriculums. Service to the community is a big part of Lovejoy ISD and the kindergarten teachers thought this project would be a great way to teach their students about the importance of giving to others. The kindergartners were excited from the beginning and set to work to prepare for the big event! They spent the next month learning about the needs of Jamaican schools, creating ads on the computer for the event, making tickets, selling tickets to their family and friends, counting money and practicing their jobs for the event. The kindergartners hosted every aspect of the event by greeting guests, selling tickets at the door, taking tickets, bringing guests to their tables, serving food and cleaning tables. The students were excited to serve pancakes to their family and friends along with Lovejoy ISD Superintendent Ted Moore. |

Submitted by Laura Nguyen The kindergartners at Hart Elementary spent the last month learning about plants in Science. They kept plant journals to record all of their observations and experiments. They investigated different types of soil, observed and sorted seeds, used the digital microscope to observe the parts of a lima bean, watched lima beans grow and labeled the parts of a plant. The students also planted "table gardens". Each table was responsible for planting various seeds, watering the seeds each day, putting the gardens in the sun in the morning and bringing them back inside in the afternoon. The kids were so excited when their "table gardens" started to sprout! They measured the growth of their plants, observed the leaves and compared the leaf shapes. |
