The kindergartners at Hart Elementary spent the last month learning about plants in Science.  They kept plant journals to record all of their observations and experiments.  They investigated different types of soil, observed and sorted seeds, used the digital microscope to observe the parts of a lima bean, watched lima beans grow and labeled the parts of a plant.  The students also planted "table gardens".  Each table was responsible for planting various seeds, watering the seeds each day, putting the gardens in the sun in the morning and bringing them back inside in the afternoon.  The kids were so excited when their "table gardens" started to sprout!  They measured the growth of their plants, observed the leaves and compared the leaf shapes. 

Our favorite activity of the plant study was the "Plant Tasting Party".  The kindergartners had the opportunity to taste the different parts of a plant including sunflower seeds (seed), carrots (root), celery (stem), lettuce (leaf), broccoli (flower) and banana (fruit).  Many parents shared stories with the teachers about how their child taught their family about what plant parts they were eating at dinner after this activity!
