“Paws”-itively Drug Free was the theme of Hart Elementary’s Red Ribbon Week. The drug free emphasis began earlier in the month with a Character Counts Assembly entitled “Choices Count” jointly sponsored by the school and Hart’s PTA. Student Council members came to school on the weekend preceding Red Ribbon Week and decorated the school in hundreds of red ribbons.

On Monday, October 26 the Lovejoy High School PALS students presented a kick-off assembly about the dangers of drug use and the importance of living a healthy life. All of the students then received their own red ribbon to wear throughout the week. The rain and mud spoiled the plans of students planting red tulips in the Hart Garden at the end of the week. (Planting will be done in November.)

The remainder of the week involved dressing in team shirts, animal print, camouflage, and lots of red. The highlight of the week was Friday’s 70/80’s Day. Staff and students found lots of ways to Celebrate a Drug Free Life. Mullets, leg warmers, rolled jeans, bell bottoms, head bands, fringed jackets, peace signs and lots of bright colors were seen throughout the building. Student Council members judged the teachers’ outfits and awarded top prizes to Fourth Grade teacher, Michela Tindall and Library Assistant, Denise Strickland.

Red Ribbon Week always gives the school a great opportunity to remind the students and community about how important it is to make good decisions about how to treat our minds and bodies.
