Leopard Lacrosse Teams Played Murphy for Season Opener

Leopard Lacrosse played their opening games this past weekend in Murphy.  The 7/8 team played first in the morning.  While we held our own in the first half, we weren’t so lucky the second half. We lost the game, but gained valuable experience for our new players.

The 5/6 team played in the afternoon and had a great showing.  We won 3 – 2 with one of our points scored a new player, Austin Henning! The boys looked good, worked well as a team and gave it their all.

Our home opening games scheduled for Sunday were canceled due to the field conditions.  This weekend, we play away games both Saturday and Sunday.

Hart Student Council members lead the student body in raising money for the school’s global service project through Project Cupid. Students bought Valentines for $.25, completed them and returned them to Student Council members for delivery.

Student Council members added a piece of candy to each Valentine, divided the Valentines by classroom teacher, dressed up like Cupid, and delivered them to the classrooms and staff on Friday, February 19th before the Valentine parties began.

Hart Elementary raised $533.60! (Check out the video link at http://hes.lovejoyisd.net/MP.cfm?P=6318 to see how Student Council announced the amount collected.) The money will be donated to the Heifer Project to purchase a cow for a family in Africa. The cost of one cow (heifer) is $500.00. When the goal was reached, excitement filled the hallways at Hart Elementary. Students throughout the school were heard saying, “Now we can buy a cow! Now we can buy a cow!”

Second Graders at Hart Elementary are tracking and graphing Team USA's Olympic medals!  In Math, we have been exploring different ways to represent data and have applied that concept to the Olympics.  Each day we use the Internet to check for updates on Team USA's medal count.  Then we color a "medal" and write the event name in the middle.  We hang the medals on our bulletin board outside in the hallway.  We graph the new changes and then re-interpret our graph every day!  It's a great "real world" connection to our Math curriculum.

4th grade at Puster has been learning about soil.  We have discussed and observed different types of soil, which soils retain the most water, and which support plant growth the best. We did some experiments on water retention using soil in panty hose. You can laugh if you want to…the kids did, too. We added 200 ml of water to 150 ml of soil in the panty hose over a graduated cylinder. We then measured how much water flowed through the soil and how much was retained. After we did that, we planted radish seeds in each soil type to check out the plant growth of each. We’re still in the process of observing these…

On February 4th, the kindergartners at Hart Elementary had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school!  The cafeteria was filled with math stations where the kids could practice concepts related to the number 100.  Some stations included making a caterpillar with circles that counted by 10’s to 100, working on a 100-piece puzzle, practicing numeral writing, making pictures using 100 pattern blocks, reading books about the 100th day of school, drawing pictures of what they will look like when they are 100 years old and finding 10 groups of 10 pennies hidden in a tub of beans.  They moved and grooved to a “100 Musical March” in which they stepped on circles that counted by 10’s to 100.  When the music stopped, a number was read and the person standing on it won the round.
