Good morning, Lovejoy Families,

Well, our 5th graders are at Adventure Camp until Friday, and they are certainly missed! It’s comforting to know they are having a great time and it is such a well-planned hands-on experience. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they have dry weather this evening. We anxiously await their return and look forward to the camp stories!

We have had approximately 30 absences each day this week. Average for this time of year is around 20. We appreciate you keeping your children home when they are ill. A reminder that we have asked that children and staff stay home if ill and do not return to school or work until fever free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication.

Thanks!

3rd Annual Burgers with the Band

Be sure to check your child’s Thursday Folder for an order form for purchasing shirts and tickets for the 3rd Annual Burgers with the Band and the 2009 LHS Blackout Event as part of the Founder’s Day Celebration on Friday, October 16th. You may return order forms and money to your child’s teacher or on Wednesday, October 7th, tables will be set up inside the cafeteria both before and after school and during students’ lunch periods.

Our goal is to create a sea of black in the stands and BLACKOUT the stadium! Every

student, staff member, parent, and Lovejoy community member is invited to show support for our LHS Varsity Football Players by purchasing a BLACKOUT T-shirt and wearing them to the game on October 16!

BURGERS WITH THE BAND, the 2nd part of this event, offers a complete burger meal

before the game from 4:30 - 7:00 PM at the home side concession stand. Not only do the

proceeds directly benefit the band students, look to enjoy the night off from cooking and

join family and friends for dinner.

WHEN IS IT?

Friday, October 16, 2009. BURGERS WITH THE BAND is 4:30 PM until 7:00 PM, followed by a BLACKOUT of the stadium during the 7:30 PM Varsity Football Game.

Read with the Leopard

Tomorrow is read with the Leopard compliments of our wrestling team.

Volleyball Night for Lovejoy Elementary

The defending state champion Lovejoy Varsity Volleyball team is hosting their annual Elementary Night on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. All elementary students will receive free admittance as well as being entered into a raffle for an opportunity to win Lovejoy Volleyball memorabilia. Come out and join the crowd as the team strives to continue its undefeated district record while taking on the Princeton Panthers.

University Interscholastic League (UIL)

In this Thursday Folder, you’ll find detailed information about the events available for the UIL competition for students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. Our 5th graders will have this information on Monday due to their being at Adventure Camp. The meet is scheduled for January 15th at Sloan Creek Middle School. While any child in the designated grade level may try out, there is a school-wide competition to determine who will represent Lovejoy Elementary at the district meet in January. Students will work with teachers in study sessions either before or after school (determined by the teacher) and will compete among students in their grade level event at the district level. On the back of the form to be completed and returned to the teacher or office, there is a brief description about each of the events. Please take the time to review and encourage your child to participate as this is such a wonderful experience for our Lovejoy Leopards.

Destination Imagination Meeting

If you are a parent of a kindergarten to fifth grader, we hope to see both you and your child/children, at the Destination Imagination Meeting on Tuesday evening at Lovejoy High School. The meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Lecture Room. Because Destination Imagination is a not-for-profit organization, almost everything is organized and executed by our wonderful volunteers. The program provides fresh and exciting offerings of team and instant challenges each school year. The program is a community-based program that builds participants creativity in problem solving and teamwork in an enjoyable and meaningful way. Adult volunteers act as facilitators to the team and that is where you come in! What a great way to support children in these life-long skills and to get to know other Lovejoy Leopards.

Positive Proof

You may recall that we offer Positive Proof to visit our school each year. This is a child identification program that includes fingerprinting and taking photos of your child. Only those students returning order forms and money will be called to the cafeteria during their grade level’s assigned time. Cards will be delivered to the school on Thursday, October 29th.

No School

A reminder that there is no school for students on, Friday, October 9th and Monday, October 12th.

A Note From our Library Media Specialist

The Lovejoy Elementary Library offers so much more than books!  We have added several Play Aways to our collection and we cannot keep them on the shelves!  A Play Away is a personal MP3 player of a popular book.  Each box contains the player on a neck cord and ear buds for the students to use when listening to the audio book.  What a fun way to enjoy a book!

Lovejoy ISD also subscribes to several online databases that are available for our students and families to use.  All of the databases are linked from the Library Media Center homepage. You should have received a list of databases and passwords.  I encourage you to keep that list close to your computer so that your student will have the necessary user names and passwords available when they are working on homework or research.  I am also listing them below.

Please note that there is a new database listed at the bottom called Maps 101.  This is an amazing database on maps and map skills.  There are historical maps, timelines, games, interactive maps and a reference atlas.  Please take some time to explore this wonderful new database.  It is very cool!

Also, the Destiny Online Catalog is now linked from the Library Media Center homepage.  If you ever want to see what your child has checked out, you simply login using their last name_first name and their student number.  Then you can see what they have out.  I hope that this will be helpful for you!

Thank you,
