Love was in the air recently at Lovejoy Elementary!  Many happy daddies and daughters enjoyed attending the first annual Daddy Daughter Dance.  Families from Puster and Lovejoy were invited to attend this fun event.  The school was transformed into a Parisian cafe with pink and black decorations.  Guests enjoyed snacks, making crafts and of course dancing!  What a fun way for daddies to spend time with their precious daughters!  Thank you to our PTA for the decorations and refreshments, it was a magical evening!

It has been said that people that play together stay together and so it is at Lovejoy Elementary School .  Our faculty enjoys learning new and better ways to teach our students and we do this by having high quality staff development sessions.  Recently Mrs. Tidwell, Mr. Freischlag, and Mrs. Greer conducted a session in the gym that explored the various levels of questioning.   Each faculty member was given a basketball and then instructed to perform a tasks with them that became increasingly harder.  We worked by ourselves and then with a group to reexamine how we want to challenge our students with higher level questions every day.  This session was not only fun, but educational as well.  Thank you to our presenters for such a meaningful session.

Did you know that we have been in school for over 100days?  This school year has flown by so far and now it is time to celebrate the 100th day of school.  Our kindergarteners here at Lovejoy had an exciting day participating in many activities that required them to count to 100.  The students made placemats that had 100 dots on them, strung necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal on them, counted by groups of 10 and even counted out 100 pennies!  What a busy day of learning!  Thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers who helped to make this day so fun!

Writing gets spicy at Lovejoy ES PDF Print E-mail

Our lesson came from the idea of helping students understand the writing trait:  word choice.  How do you get 40 squirmy 4th Graders to think about adding vibrant verbs, and descriptive adjectives to their drafts?  And then we found the book:  Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds.   It’s a hilarious tale of barnyard animals who get tired of the same boring food everyday.  The rooster decides to matters into his own hands and one day discovers the farmer’s wife watching a cooking show on TV.  The next thing we know, the rooster is making salsa – although no one is certain where the rooster got the chips!  As the story continues, the peppers get pilfered, the limes get lifted, and the ducks make guacamole – although no one is certain where the ducks got the avocados!

An idea was born:  let’s invite students to taste test a plain tortilla – it represents their drafts before we start revising.  A plain old tortilla is okay – but we know that with a little help we can turn a tortilla into a crispy chip that’s just begging for salsa!  Our writing can get spicy when we add sensory descriptors and substitute bland words for bold verbs and adjectives.   The next part of the writing lesson is the fun part:  eating chips and homemade salsa.  Our 4th graders love spicing up their writing!  Great job!

Lovejoy Elementary fourth graders had the opportunity to perform Tuesday, February 2nd during halftime of a girl’s varsity basketball game at the Lovejoy High School Gymnasium. The students worked together to create their routine and spent many class periods practicing for their performance. Our fourth graders represented Lovejoy Elementary well by showing school spirit and cheering for our Lady Leopards.
