Puster Chicks Arrive PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, April 20th, brought much excitement to one first grade classroom at Puster Elementary. After 21 days of anticipation, the first “peep, peep” was heard coming from the classroom incubator! For 21 days, the children had been learning about chickens.

They learned that only eggs that have part of the hen and the rooster will have a chick inside. Erika explains “the ones at the store were from a farm without a rooster to fertilize them.”

Every few days, we “candled” the eggs, shining a bright light into the egg to watch the development of the eggs. At first, we just saw a dark spot which grew in size over the days. Towards the 21st day, we could see the chicken’s feet pressed against the egg.

On the 21st day, after much peeping, our first chicken sprang from his egg, wet and tired. The children could see the egg tooth the chick used to free himself from the egg. They watched as he stumbled around, trying out his legs for the first time. What an amazing experience for these learners (and their teachers!).
