Fifth Grade students at Puster are learning that one person really can make a difference.  Counselor, Allyene Byroad is reading them a story called One Grain of Rice.  It is a story about a girl who helps to feed her village beginning only with one grain of rice.  Her amount doubles every day. The students see that by the end of one month, she has over one billion grains of rice.  She uses the StarBoard to show how many grains she has each day.  She then leads them to apply that to caring for others. If one person helps one person, and it doubles everyday, would that make a difference?  Then the students went on www.freerice.com to make put this into practice.  It is a website that gives grains of rice instead of points. The students play a vocabulary game and they win 10 grains for every correct answer.  The United Nations World Food Program donates the grains of rice and distributes it to needy people.  In just a few minutes of playing, this fifth grade class donated over 2000 grains of rice.  They walked away knowing that they really made a difference.

About This Site

So much can be said in a name. In our case, our name says it all. First and foremost, this web site is a labor of love by a group of parents to celebrate the school district that is the heart of our community.

Lovejoy is a community of students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents and residents of all ages. This is a web site by and for our community. There are so many good things happening in this community on a daily basis that we had to dedicate a whole web site to showcase them.

We hope this web site will be a source of inspiration, and we invite all of you to share the love that is Lovejoy!
