Good evening!

Fall weather is in the air and it is nice to have cooler weather! Our fifth graders leave for camp on Wednesday and should have good weather while they are there.

Puster students can be seen in Friday’s edition of the Dallas Morning News 'Neighbors Go'.  The cover story is about Bob Cash, one of the veterans we honored at our Celebrate Freedom Parade last Friday.  There is a story and pictures of staff and students from the parade.  Our 5th graders from Lovejoy ISD are featured singing the National Anthem in a photo taken at Leopard Friday.  ‘Neighbors Go’ can be found in Friday's edition of the Dallas Morning News and in local Starbucks.

Chess Club Canceled For Monday, September 28

Due to Sloan Creek's closing for Monday, September 28th, there will be no chess club for our Puster Students.  The make-up date will be shared at a later date.

5th Grade Camp and Illness

Parents of 5th graders, please follow the same guidelines in sending students to camp as you would for sending them to school. Keep them home if they are ill and do not send them to camp unless they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication. In the event a student must miss because of sickness, we will refund your money.

From the Nurse

Parents,

Now that school is back, I want to encourage each of you to check your child's head regularly for lice.  The best prevention is inspection!  I have attached information on what Lice and their eggs look like.  Lice can be spread by sharing helmets, brushes, combs, hair bows, etc. Please encourage your children to not share these items.  If you do suspect lice, please contact the clinic and I would be happy to help and answer any questions you may have.

Remember: Prevention by inspection!!(See the attachment)

Upcoming Election

Early Voting Information:

Lovejoy Elementary Gym, for the September 29th Tax Ratification Election.

September 29th has been set for an election for LISD voters to have the opportunity to ratify the M&O tax rate of $1.06 for the 2009-2010 school year; this is a 2 cent increase from last year. This is the first time that we have come to you to ratify the tax rate as a new requirement from the school funding bill.

Here are key points regarding the 2009-2010 budget:

· The district made almost $1 million dollars in belt-tightening moves prior to recommending a 2 cent increase

· The State of Texas provides an incentive to school districts for investing in their local schools by adding almost 50 cents to every dollar raised from local tax collections; a local increase of 2 pennies will add a total of $420,000 for your schools

· The additional dollars will be used exclusively for classroom-based technology and two school buses to be used for both regular routing and extracurricular trips

· The average home value in Lovejoy ISD is $355,942 and this change in the tax rate will cost the average homeowner $71.19 per year

· Lovejoy ISD will not be required to pay any recapture (Robin Hood) back to Austin for redistribution

Leopard Lacrosse for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Boys

Be a part of our inaugural Lacrosse season – don’t miss out! Practices will start in January and games will begin in February. Teams are now forming. For more information, visit www.leopardlacrosse.net .

Dads Club Basket Ball:

The Lovejoy ISD dads meet every Wednesday (closed holiday's) at Sloan Creek Middle School for Basketball.  The gym hours are from 7 pm to 9 pm.  This activity is part of the Lovejoy ISD Dads Club and is restricted by the district to Lovejoy ISD taxpayers and staff, so please no ringers, college buddies, co-workers, etc (unless they live or work in the districts)...  The general idea is for the dads to get to know each other and get a little exercise at the same time.  If you know other dads that want to play please have them contact Jason Vaughn at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to be added to the distribution list.

We play at Sloan Creek Middle School which is located on the East side of Country Club Road north of Stacy Road.  The Gym's are located in the back Northeast corner of the school.   Enter around the back of the school through the glass double doors by the tennis courts.  The doors will be unlocked and we will be in one of the gyms and then just follow the sounds of bones creaking and heavy breathing to the gym.

Lovejoy Gifted Association

From the time a student finishes the 8th grade until they graduate high school, they only have 2 million minutes.  The Lovejoy Gifted Association invites the community to watch a thought provoking film on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.  This film explores how 3 different sets of teenagers from the US, China and India invest their time and energy.  This 54 minute film will make you think about how your children spend their time and will help them weigh their choices during this important point in their education.  Cost is $5.00 for adults and is free to all Lovejoy Gifted Association members and students.

The LD Zone - A Play About Bright Students Who Learn Differently - October 8, 2009 - LHS Auditorium - 7:00pm

This entertaining and educational play is based on a production created by the Dallas Fine Arts Chamber Players in 1996.  Their educational troupe, Dream Collectors, created the play to promote awareness of dyslexia, a reading disorder that affects one out of seven people, and to encourage early diagnosis and intervention.

About This Site

So much can be said in a name. In our case, our name says it all. First and foremost, this web site is a labor of love by a group of parents to celebrate the school district that is the heart of our community.

Lovejoy is a community of students, teachers, staff, parents, grandparents and residents of all ages. This is a web site by and for our community. There are so many good things happening in this community on a daily basis that we had to dedicate a whole web site to showcase them.

We hope this web site will be a source of inspiration, and we invite all of you to share the love that is Lovejoy!
