Puster Principal Message
September 11, 2009
Good evening!
This afternoon we held our first Puster Pride for the 2009-10 school year! What an awesome gathering! We recognized students for their academic accomplishments in the classroom, learned about respect, sang, and just had a good time celebrating together! If you have never joined us for Puster Pride, I hope that you will find a Friday afternoon to stop by and celebrate with us! Check the calendar for Puster Pride dates!
Next Friday, September 18, at 9:45am Puster Elementary will hold our Celebrate Freedom Parade! You are invited to come and line the drive to watch as our students proudly parade from the front of the school to the back courtyard. We have invited some veterans from Heritage Ranch to lead our parade! This is a fun way to celebrate our Constitution and the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States of America! Please make sure your child wears red, white, and blue to school on Friday!
Tailgating for LHS football game
**Please note - The LHS Gridiron Club has closed tailgating for tonight's LHS game due to the weather and will reopen next week.
Destination Book Fair
Please come and have lunch with your student on Tuesday, September 15th and after lunch, enjoy some special shopping time at the book fair. See the attachment with grade level lunch times.
GT Curriculum Night
All parents of GATE 10 students are invited to attend the GT Curriculum Night for Puster students on September 22 @ 6:00pm.
Electronic Devices at School
We are asking parents to please help us in making sure that students are not bringing electronic devices to school. The elementary student handbook states:
“Students are not permitted to possess such items as pagers, radios, iPod/MP3 players, CD players, tape recorders, camcorders, DVD players, cameras, electronic devices or games at school, unless prior permission has been obtained from the principal. Without such permission, teachers will collect the items and turn them in to the principal’s office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items.”
This includes bringing the items for use on the bus, since the items then come with the student into the school. Please make sure that your child knows that unless specifically directed to do so by a teacher, these devices need to remain at home.
PTA Membership
If you haven’t joined PTA yet a membership form came home in your child’s Thursday folder. You can also donate to the Leopard Drive on the same form. Only PTA memberships that have been received by October 2nd will be listed in the PTA School Directory. Thanks for supporting our Puster PTA! See Attachment

From the Counselor…
How is the "bucket-filling" in your family? I truly see more and more buckets filled each day here at Puster. There are more "good mornings!" and smiles as students walk in. I see more hugs and waves in the hallways during the day, and more "See you tomorrow!" as they leave. Mr. Puster told the students last Friday that Puster is the friendliest school he has ever seen. Now he may be biased, but our goal is to be a school of great character. This week's focus was on courtesy, an essential ingredient of respect. In the words of our Puster Pillar Rap:
Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility
Won't you try the character rap with me?
Fairness, Caring, Citizenship too.
Do you listen to your conscience when it tells you what to do?

Reading with the Leopards
We are excited about Reading with the Leopards on Friday, September 18. Our football boys will be on-site to greet our students and share a story. Cheerleaders will be on site as well, and will be selling football ribbons for $1. The inflatable helmet will be in place on Friday, allowing students to make their way through the helmet. We look forward to our day with Reading with the Leopards! What a great way to get the spirit started for Leopard Friday!

President Obama’s Speech
As most if not all of you know, President Obama addressed our school age children this past Tuesday morning. The Lovejoy District opted to not view the speech live but rather download and review the contents to see if it’s age appropriate for all levels and if there are curriculum connections with what is being taught at this time. After reading the speech, we have selected to not replay the speech on the elementary campuses. While we respect and appreciate his message, our opinion is that is geared to older children. If you choose, you may visit this website for a copy of President Obama’s speech and view its contents should you feel it is appropriate for your child. http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks/
How Will Your Child Spend Their 2 Million Minutes?
From the time a student finishes the 8th grade until they graduate high school, they only have 2 million minutes. The Lovejoy Gifted Association invites the community to watch a thought provoking film on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. This film explores how 3 different sets of teenagers from the US, China and India invest their time and energy. This 54 minute film will make you think about how your children spend their time and will help them weigh their choices during this important point in their education. Cost is $5.00 for adults and is free to all Lovejoy Gifted Association members and students. For more information see the Lovejoy Gifted Association website. (See attachment)
