Preheim-smLast year in Mr. Peter Preheim's 4th grade class at Hart Elementary, students gave in a different way--they gave school supplies. Yes, instead of receiving gifts, such as coffee mugs, ties and candles, Mr. Preheim offered to help the kids help others. This started many, many years ago. Mr. Preheim, being the man that he is, did not want the children to waste money on him, so instead of receiving gifts for Christmas, or teacher appreciation, or end of the year, students helped give to children in need. Each year the room mothers help with the process of buying school supplies when they go on sale. They store the supplies at their homes until the beginning of the next school year.  At that time, the fifth graders gather back with Mr. Preheim and stuff homemade bags with supplies that will reach all over the world.

Eagle1Lovejoy High School Junior Charles Susong accomplished something few Boy Scouts do, and even fewer young men do. On May 31, 2008 Charles was awarded the highest rank in Scouting - Eagle Scout. As part of the path to Eagle, each scout must organize and complete a community service project. In 1998 NJWPT initiated the Dana Kay Barber Student Writing Awards in remembrance of Dana Kay Barber, a vital, dedicated, excellent, and beloved teacher. Honoring her love of students and her love of writing through this award has led to hundreds of students from the state of Texas to receive this award.

Each year a committee of teachers from all grade levels reads 300 - 700 entries. These coded entries, which reveal neither the name of the student nor the name of the district on the manuscript, are evaluated totally on the quality of the writing.

It is indeed an honor to place in this event. Out of the 14 awards given to elementary students this year, Lovejoy ISD earned 5 of them. The winners were presented medals and a certificate in Austin, Texas on March 29th in the Awards session hosted by Abydos Learning International with family and friends present.  To read the award-winning poem written by Jordan Toomey from Hart Elementary, please visit our Student Work page.
