Congratulations to our Sloan Creek Chess Team for competing in the 2010 Texas State Chess Championships this weekend! The Texas State Chess Championship tournament allowed for two competitions simultaneously: Individual and Team. Individuals were segregated in sections within the middle school division based on ratings already determined by previous tournament play. Teams are not selected by the coaches, but were automatically formed by school (not district) boundaries and ranked and divided by chess ratings. The top four players of a team (students from the same school in the same section) determine the outcome of the competition. This was our first time to send teams to STATE and our first time to send 3 teams in 3 divisions to a chess tournament !!! WOW! |

On Tuesday, January 12, the Sloan Creek Middle School PTA presented an informative and startling program educating parents on the dangers of sexting in today's society. The presenters were Debbie Benko, a Lovejoy parent and a juvenile attorney, and also Judge Cyndi Wheless, the Collin County juvenile judge. They offered unique perspectives from their experiences and expertise in the field of juvenile delinquency. The program was very informative. During the meeting, Lovejoy Superintendent Ted Moore answered some of the questions that were raised and also commented that we do have sexting and other cell phone issues in our district. The Lovejoy district, like the rest of America, is not immune to this problem, and we as a society are learning how to deal with this problem.
In some parts of the country, when a person under the age of 18 is found in possession of an inappropriate picture of someone under 18, they can be charged as a sexual predator for the rest of their life. In many cases, sexting can also lead to suicide over the humiliation of the victim's picture being exposed. The major points stressed at the presentation were communication with your child and the dangers that once something is put on the Internet, it can never be taken away. You must educate your child on the responsibility of owning a cell phone. Check your child's phone and their text messages regularly. Regulate your child's access to the Internet and possible sites that can influence your child in an inappropriate way. The link below is to the PowerPoint presentation that the ladies presented to the audience. Please take the time to look this over and discuss it with your child. Sexting and inappropriate uses of cell phones are out there, and you and your children need to be informed about it.
