Cat Scratch Fever

The Freshman Leopards football squad made it two in a row last Thursday night against the Paris Wildcats, who were hosting Lovejoy in their new stadium. Stephen Bennett got the scoring started by scooping up a Wildcat fumble and rumbling 50 yards for a Leopard touchdown. Mick Ellis tacked on the PAT to make the score 7-0.  Paris countered with a 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but Lovejoy stuffed the conversion which made the score 7-6. The Leopards responded, with Bennett scoring his second consecutive touchdown on a 29-yard run late in the 2nd quarter. Again, Ellis kicked the PAT for a 14-6 Leopard lead going into the half.

The third quarter was relatively quiet with no scoring by either team. Paris got on the board in the 4th, with a 96-yard touchdown run. But the Leopards once again stopped the two-point conversion to keep the score 14-12 in favor of Lovejoy. The Leopards quickly scored again on a 64-yard rushing touchdown by Ellis, assisted by a vicious downfield block by Jacob Poteete. With the Ellis PAT, the score became Lovejoy 21, Paris 12. Ellis added a late 19-yard touchdown run (and converted the PAT) to ice the game.

The Leopard defense repeatedly de-clawed the Wildcats, including a drive stopping interception by Alex Hamilton and three fumble recoveries by Stephen Bennett, Coby Countryman and Stephen Larsen. It turned out not to be much of a catfight, with the final score Leopards 28 – Wildcats 12.

Captains: Drew Scolaro and Guy Roecker

The JV Leopards traveled to Paris last Thursday night and restarted their season with a solid win over the Wildcats. Rain threatened throughout the evening, the new Paris stadium was impressive, but none of that matter because the night belonged to Lovejoy.

Starting the first quarter on their own 38 yard line, it took the Leopards 7 plays to put the ball in the end zone. Scott Salamina’s running game, and a pass from QB Scolaro to Grayson Williams, put the Leopards into Wildcat territory. A big run from Scolaro, followed by a one yard run by the QB, and Leopards scored. Matt Sims added the extra point.

Paris met the Leopard defensive and was forced to punt after two runs for losses and an incomplete pass.

The Leopards started on their 37 yard line, and used the running skills of Cameron Seay, Brandon Scott, and QB Scolaro. Nine plays and the Leopards scored. Sims added the extra point. Lovejoy 14 – Paris 0.

The second quarter saw a quick Paris touchdown, but the Leopards scored again after Scolaro and team found themselves at 3rd down at the 12 yard line. A quarter-back keeper put the Leopards up 21 to 7. The Wildcats started on their own 21, but defensive plays by Jonah Barth, Dylan Beauregard, and Dalton Lloyd, pounded the Wildcat offense, and the Leopards recovered a fumble on the Paris 32. The half ended with Paris in control of the ball, but they were unable to convert an interception into any points.

The third quarter started with a scary 68 yard TD run for Paris. Lovejoy 21. Paris 14.

The first possession for the Leopards in the second half was a struggle and it set up a punt, but an off-sides penalty by Paris served the Leopards with an automatic first-down. Salamina had big run that took the Leopards to the Wildcat 24 yard line. QB Scolaro had a nice touchdown run. Lovejoy 28. Paris 14. Paris couldn’t score on their next possession and attempted a punt that didn’t go as planned. Result: a safety for Lovejoy. Lovejoy 30. Paris 14.

The next Lovejoy possession was led by quarterback Zach Wilkins, running backs Jeff Reitinger and Cameron Seay, and important runs by Mason LaTour. The play clock was running low, but LaTour ran for the touchdown. Lovejoy 37 – Paris 14.

In the beginning of the 4th quarter, Paris had their hands full against Leopard defenders Mitch Hunt, Zach Hall, and Jonathan Otiker, but the Wildcats scored.

Possession went back and forth throughout the fourth quarter. Jace Caton had two big defensive plays in one series- helping force the Wildcats to punt. And Paris threatened when their QB ran for a TD, but their 2 point conversion attempt failed. The Leopards returned a rested QB Scolaro to the field and Lovejoy scored on an impressive QB-keeper. Sims added the extra point. Lovejoy 44 – 27. The Wildcats tried to score one last time, but they were stopped by the Leopards and big tackles from Kyle Romano and Chase McAlister.

Lovejoy Rebounds in Home Opener 09-03-10

The Lovejoy Leopards capitalized on 6 Paris turnovers, on their way to a 55-13 rout of the Wildcats. Still licking their wounds from last week’s defeat in Argyle, the Leopards entered Friday night’s game with seemingly more questions than answers. As the capacity crowd filled the stands, the Leopards took the field hoping they could repeat a little of last season’s magic.

After giving up 80 yards on 9 plays and an early touchdown, the Leopard defense stiffened, and began to look like the Black Shirts of old. Following an Eddie Puskarich 33 yard field goal, the Leopards trailed 7-3 before junior Trey Carson returned an interception to the 15 yard line. Parker Norris’ 9 yard scamper and the ensuing 2 pt conversion had the Leopards up 11-7. And the Leopards never looked back. Sophomore Zach Saffle returned a Wildcat fumble to the 5 yard line and Michael Means opened the second quarter with a 1 yard touchdown run giving the Leopards a 17-7 margin.

Not to be outdone, 2009 standout Blake Westback picked off Paris’ Corben Taylor, returning the interception to the Wildcat 36. From there, Means hit Hayden Marsh on a slant and after a missed PAT, the Leopards led 23-7. Senior Parker Norris continued to frustrate Paris as he picked up a fake field goal and scored from 25 yards out and Lovejoy enjoyed a 30-7 lead. Paris found pay dirt with 8 seconds remaining in the half; their 2 point conversion failed and the halftime score had Lovejoy ahead, 30-13.

To open the second half, Junior Eddie Puskarich hit a 53 yard field goal, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Sophomore safety Austin Turnbow recorded a pick six from 25 yards out on Paris’ second offensive play from scrimmage, and the Leopards were up 40-13. Ryan Lusby filled in well at the Leopard QB position highlighted by a 45 yard strike to Ben Thomas that stretched the Lovejoy lead to 48-13 with 3:18 left in the third quarter.

Midway through the 4th quarter, Zach Saffle picked off yet another pass from Paris’ Dakota Smith, returning it 76 yards to the 9. Sophomore Nick LaSane put the game away with a 5 yard touchdown run giving the Leopards their first victory of the 2010 season, 55-13.

“They played very hard and played together for the whole night,” said Coach Jim Bob Puckett following the game. “The boys seemed to find their swagger again after a slow start. I was glad to have all the boys contribute to this TEAM victory.”

On paper, the game looked much closer as Paris posted 19 first downs to Lovejoy’s 12. “It was turnovers and inconsistency,” said Paris head coach Travis Smith. “When you give a team that explosive the ball within the 20-yard line two times, they’re going to score. They’re hard enough to stop when they’re on their 20, much less when they’re on our 20.”

Lovejoy’s Blake Martin had an outstanding game gaining 109 yards on 6 rushes. Nick LaSane added 30 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown. Parker Norris rushed 3- 30 with two scores. Ryan Lusby went 3-5 for 68 yards and a touchdown, while Michael Means was 6-10. Ben Thomas led all receivers with 2 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. The Lovejoy defense pitched a shutout in the second half, led by Senior Austin Ray who recorded 3 sacks.

The Leopards square off against 4A Frisco next Thursday night at 7:00pm at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco.
