RED TEAM
The Rockwall Cain Mustangs White Team met the Sloan Creek Leopards Red Team in the cool evening on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. The Mustangs got off to a good start when they took over on their own 27 yard line following a 41 yard kick by Cody McLamore. The Mustangs were able to score a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage but were not able to convert the extra points. The Leopards offense took over and was lead by Bryce Lusby. With a mix of running by Alex Hopkinson, Carter Benno and Lusby and a pass completion to McLamore the Leopards were able to drive down the field 46 yards and into Mustang territory. The Mustangs took over deep in their territory following an interception late in the first quarter. The Leopard defensive line held the Mustang offense to minimal yardage on tackles from Ian Griffith, Mason Olk, Daaron McFarling, and Ben Krumrei. The Mustangs threaten to score on a 53 yard run but were stopped short as Olk brought the runner down from behind to close out the quarter. The Mustangs were able to score two more touchdowns in the second quarter despite some great Leopard defensive tackling by Clayton Merrill, Brennan Ballew, Patrick Welsh, McFarling, and Olk. The Leopard offense was highlighted in the second quarter by the offensive line doing an excellent job of protecting the quarterback and some great running by Alex Hamilton and Sam Victor, and Welsh catching a 28 yard pass from Lusby. The half ended with the score Cain 19 – Sloan Creek 0.
Starting off the second half in good field position following a 15 yard kick return by Jeremy Drum, the Leopards were able to mount an impressive opening drive. Hamilton carried the ball 5 times for 56 yards and scored a Leopard touchdown on a quarterback option pitch from Lusby. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Mustangs. The rest of the game the Leopard defense did an outstanding job of holding the Mustangs to a total of 21 yards in 5 possessions. Chad Romano, Colby Countryman, Hamilton, McFarling, Krumrei, Ballew, Olk, Victor, Drum, and Griffith provided the defensive tackling to shut down the Mustang offense. The Leopard offense, lead by Lusby and Grant Fate, struggled in an attempt to put more points on the board. The offensive effort was highlighted by 27 rushing yards on 3 carries by Hamilton and Victor catching a couple of passes from Lusby for 26 yards. The final score of the game – Cain Mustangs 19 – Sloan Creek Leopards – 6.
BLACK TEAM
The Rockwall Cain Mustang Purple Team battled the Sloan Creek Leopard Black Team on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. The Mustangs started in their own territory following a 42 yard kick from Mick Ellis. On the Mustangs opening play the Leopard defense stripped the ball and Donald O’Connor picked up the fumble to give the Leopard offense the ball. The Leopards were not able to capitalize on the good field position and the Mustang offense took over following an interception. The Mustangs put together an offensive drive despite a great Leopard defensive team effort. Joseph Whittman, Nick Larsen, Chochy Luce, Carter Daily, and Steven Larsen provided some great tackling. The Mustangs were able to score a touchdown but Whittman stopped the extra point attempt to end the quarter with a score of Cain 6 – Sloan Creek 0. In the start of the second quarter the Leopards were able to answer with their own offensive drive that saw Luce catch an Ellis pass for 60 yards and Ellis scramble in the backfield and ran into the end zone for a Leopard touchdown. McLemore’s extra point kick went wide. The Mustang offense bounced back but was stopped by the defensive efforts of Brad Jacobs, Grant Jarvis, Tate Locklear, Andrew Adamson, Nick Larsen, Daniel Sefcik, Luce, and Daily with the clincher as Tate Locklear blocked a Mustang pass in the end-zone on fourth down. The Mustangs were able to get the ball back following an interception and score with 1 minute left in the half bringing the score to Cain 12 – Sloan Creek 6 to close out the half.
The third quarter started off with a Leopard 20 yard kick-off return by Luce bringing the Leopards to midfield. The Leopards went 4 and out giving the ball to the Mustangs at midfield. The Mustangs scored their final touchdown and extra points midway in the third quarter, bringing the score to Cain 20 – Sloan Creek 6. The Leopards tried to battle back but were unable to score again despite some receptions by Nick Larsen, Steven Larsen and Grant Jarvis from Luce and Ellis. The Leopard defense was solid for second half of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter only allowing 25 total yards of Mustang offense. The Leopard defense was highlighted by tackles by Jacobs, Nick Larsen, Jarvis, Dalton Simmons, Luce, O’Connor, Ellis, John Embry, and Garrett Northcutt. The final score Rockwall Cain 20 – Lovejoy Sloan Creek 6.
