"The Night Lady"

by Jordan Toomey

On a jeweled evening, when the stars shine like halos and the

moon flashes silver, the otters dance. They swoon across the

water, light as air. The water scarcely ripples as they dance in

the moonlight. Gliding swans, floating over the deep blue

blackness, a mystery as they vanish in mist. Or maybe the

mystery is in the mist itself, as a flash of bright fuchsia

dances: fairies in the night. They flick their oak wands and

dew-drops fall, speckling even the otters, who dive beneath the

surface to rest on lily pad beds. The Water Lilies glow with light,

and a single orb web glitters with beauty. A magnificent Tiger

Lily announces the arrival of the midnight haze of shooting

stars. The Night Lady glides over the lake, as sparkling

raindrops burst with light as Night Pansies bloom. The Night

Lady vanishes; reappearing in the starry haze, where she is

wrapped in a giant black blanket which is the night sky. She

grabs a rainbow, and she begins to draw the waning moon as

she makes way for the Day Lady. The fairies burst in an arc of

fiery light, ready for the arrival of Daybreak Dawn.
