Dear Lovejoy Community:

I am sure that most of you have heard by how that our high school principal, Dr. Mike Goddard, has accepted the position of assistant superintendent for the Prosper ISD. Mike will finish out the school year with us. Mike has given his heart and soul to the development of LovejoyHigh School and has done an excellent job of building the program. Mike has a huge heart for kids and has invested in your sons and daughters as if they were his own. This central office promotion is a good career move for him, but we will miss him and his presence at LovejoyHigh School. I was an assistant principal at Allen High School when Mike was a student and now have worked with him for the past eight years and I assure you that I feel as if I have not only lost a valued employee, but also a member of my family as well.

Participate in the Process

I am meeting with the high school staff on Monday to discuss the selection process and the most desired qualities in the new principal. I would like for you to have input to the process as well and am offering two opportunities. You are welcome to meet with me on Monday, April 26, 2010, at 9:00-10:00 am in the training room at the AdminBuilding for a discussion on the principal selection process. I will also be available for same on Tuesday evening, April 27th, at 6:00-7:30 pm in the Lecture Room at LovejoyHigh School.

Rumor Mill Revisited

Please allow me to address the following in response to a request for factual information that I received this week:

Rumor: Lovejoy ISD was inaccurate when the district stated that the WillowSpringsMiddle School site on

West Lucas Road
was not large enough to accommodate an on-site waste water treatment facility and still have enough room for athletic practice fields.

Response: The Lovejoy ISD has reported that the Willow Springs site is not large enough to accommodate both a waste water treatment facility on the site and still have sufficient space for athletic practice fields. This information is accurate and is based on information that we have received from both a professional sanitarian and a civil engineer. While the Willow Springs site before any dedications for public right-of-way is approximately 30 acres, our professional consultants have told us that approximately 8 acres will be needed for the drip field for the wastewater treatment area. The drip field will be larger than in an elementary campus due to the volume of wastewater per day for a middle school as well as the relatively low soil absorption rate. Therefore, the additional land required for the wastewater treatment facility will result in a loss of athletic fields. In the absence of practice areas, athletes would have to be bussed to an alternate site.

Rumor: The LISD spent over $1 million on the upgrades to the baseball/softball complex and the money came from the budget for the new middle school.

Response: The upgrades to the baseball/softball complex cost approximately $935,000. Due to the drop in construction costs, we project sufficient funds in the future middle school construction budget to fund the athletic upgrades and still have enough money to build the new middle school without additional bonds. At the time that projections were made for the new middle school, our consultants recommended a 10% plus factor for inflation. Due to the poor economy, construction inflation costs are running 3-4% and we should lock into a cost for this project in January 2011. It was prudent to go ahead and do these upgrades while construction costs are down and the funds were available as opposed to doing them at a greater cost after the construction economy bounces back.

Lovejoy ISD Trustee Election

The LISD Council of PTAs is sponsoring a Meet the Candidate Forum on Wednesday night, April 21st, at 7:00 pm in the Sloan Creek Cafetorium. It is my understanding that all candidates will be present and that audience members will be allowed to submit questions that will be offered to the candidates by a representative from the Collin County League of Women Voters. Early voting will begin on April 26th and Election Day is May 8. Full details on election at:

Majestics Dance Show

I had two events last night so I only saw the first half of this spring’s dance show. You can see the show tonight or tomorrow night and if the second half is as good as the first, I encourage you to go. Details at: Majesticsdance.org In the second act, they had the senior majestic’s dads dancing with their daughters; I would bet that will be worth the cost of admission.

I also wanted you to know:

  • Boys and Girls Track Teams both won the District 13-3A championship yesterday
  • Boys Golf teams took first and third place in District Golf Meet
  • Girls Golf team took second in District Golf Meet
  • Tuesday night is Senior Night for our baseball team who is on top in the District 13-3A standings

I hope you enjoy the weekend.

Respectfully,

Ted Moore

Superintendent
